Shoppers at North Star Mall in San Antonio and The Parks Mall at Arlington will be able to peruse the online retailer’s devices — including the Echo, Fire TV, Fire tablets, Dash Button and Kindle — and ask employees about Amazon’s services such as its Prime subscription at the kiosk-like stores, according to a page on the company’s website. According to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records, Amazon is planning additional pop-ups at Willowbrook Mall in Houston, The Woodlands Mall in The Woodlands and Baybrook Mall in Friendswood. Sandeep Mathrani — CEO of real estate investment trust General Growth Properties Inc., which owns North Star Mall — said Amazon’s goal is to open “300 to 400 bookstores” during an earnings call in February, indicating that Amazon may be eyeing real estate in major retail centers.

Amazon now has a global full- and part-time workforce of 647,000, which is 50% more people than Alphabet, Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft combined. Among U.S. companies, only Walmart, with 2.3 million, employs more people, but Walmart’s total head count hasn’t budged significantly in years. By contrast, Amazon employs more than six times as many workers as it did when Galetti joined. It has been adding an average of 337 people a day and currently has 28,000 open positions.
