Homework assignment asks students to list positive aspects of slavery

Homework assignment asks students to list positive aspects of slavery | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
A Texas charter school is apologizing after a teacher gave an assignment to an eighth grade American History class, asking students to list the positive aspects of slavery.
Al Cannistra's insight:

WHY APOLOGIZE - for asking about the positive benefits of slavery?

.

All the hubbub over what? And an example of why "teaching" is in trouble. The education system preferred today seems to prefer turning students into followers - not thinkers. I suppose that is a step toward world order.

.

What is wrong with the "discussion" - so students themselves can learn what is wrong with it? What is wrong with reviewing history about it? What is wrong with exploring slavery outside the USA and teaching that slavery has been a part of humanity throughout history? How are kids to learn if they cannot examine and think thru it.

.

It would be sad if doctors in training cannot examine dead bodies and discuss what they learned. Slavery is a dead body!

Teacher Fails Students Who Won't Do Work and Her School District Fired Her

Teacher Fails Students Who Won't Do Work and Her School District Fired Her | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
Diane Tirado was told she had to give students at least a 50% grade, even if they handed in zero work. She didn't and now she's lost her job.
Al Cannistra's insight:

MAKA – in a DIFFERENT WAY

.

I have long been a critic of our education system and it’s OVERPAID beneficiaries.

.

For a long time, the answer has been “throw more money at it” – and it will improve. The admins play upon parents who want better for their children – and then do not deliver.

.

This teacher did the RIGHT thing – and got fired.

.

If parents REALLY love their children – they will get involved. It is time for change – from kindergarten through higher education. A makeover is long over due.

The New Teacher Project says low expectations hurt kids

The New Teacher Project says low expectations hurt kids | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
For many kids, what they learn in high school isn’t preparing them for success in college or in their career. A new report delves into how our education system is letting them down.
Al Cannistra's insight:

It should be obvious we have a problem, however because educators are such a large voting and economic block, the necessary conversation does not happen. IMO, it is not necessarily the teachers who are to blame. A long stern look at the admins and the programs they dictate may have surprising consequences. Constantly pouring money into education is not a solution. Time to look into it…
