My Life in Poverty: Surviving on $3 a Day

My Life in Poverty: Surviving on $3 a Day | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
The seven life lessons I've learned living in poverty
Al Cannistra's insight:

We look at this – living on $3 a day and think IMPOSSIBLE – but, yes indeed it is. I know someone close who did exactly that and survived – still does although slightly improved. It was interesting to observe how well the person hid it – no one knew – or maybe wanted to know. The person is well skilled at camouflage and outside of myself and one other person the details are not shared. The person is proud and would not want help from others so the dilemma continues. No good answers – as a friend there are limits on what you can do. I’ll echo the article author – HOPE is important.

Ben Carson calls poverty ‘a state of mind’ during interview

Ben Carson calls poverty ‘a state of mind’ during interview | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
The HUD secretary said a person with "the wrong mindset" won't get out of poverty even if you "give them everything in the world."
Al Cannistra's insight:

IMO - Dr Ben has it right.... and time to change that. Much like the Chicago "projects" were a failure because it was a caretaker plan rather than a temporary solution with a planned exit...  and much like what I saw when I was working the Family Crisis Team as a volunteer - all these feel good solutions are not solutions. The mindset becomes the norm. Do you think it is normal to have to call the cops to settle a family dispute 3 or 4 times a week? There are people that do (And that is the only example I am going to give from the personal experience) - bottom line, time to look at real solutions - and a new mindset.
