Flu is now widespread in 46 states

Flu is now widespread in 46 states | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
The overall impact can vary greatly year to year, but flu always takes a substantial toll. CDC estimates that influenza has caused 9 million to 35 million illnesses, 140,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 to 56,000 deaths in the United States each year since 2010. In many cases, hospitalizations and deaths do not show up in official reports, for a variety of reasons — including the fact that most people with flu are never tested for it and that states are not required to report adult flu deaths.

Trump has a plan for government workers. They’re not going to like it. | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
Hiring freezes, an end to automatic raises, a green light to fire poor performers, a ban on union business on the government’s dime and less generous pensions — these are the contours of the blueprint emerging under Republican control of Washington in January.

These changes were once unthinkable to federal employees, their unions and their supporters in Congress. But Trump’s election as an outsider promising to shake up a system he told voters is awash in “waste, fraud and abuse” has conservatives optimistic that they could do now what Republicans have been unable to do in the 133 years since the civil service was created.

Shoppers at North Star Mall in San Antonio and The Parks Mall at Arlington will be able to peruse the online retailer’s devices — including the Echo, Fire TV, Fire tablets, Dash Button and Kindle — and ask employees about Amazon’s services such as its Prime subscription at the kiosk-like stores, according to a page on the company’s website. According to Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation records, Amazon is planning additional pop-ups at Willowbrook Mall in Houston, The Woodlands Mall in The Woodlands and Baybrook Mall in Friendswood. Sandeep Mathrani — CEO of real estate investment trust General Growth Properties Inc., which owns North Star Mall — said Amazon’s goal is to open “300 to 400 bookstores” during an earnings call in February, indicating that Amazon may be eyeing real estate in major retail centers.
