Don Norman on how design fails older consumers

Don Norman on how design fails older consumers | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
WHAT OLDER CONSUMERS WANT AND NEED
As we age, we have more experience with life, which can make us better decision-makers and managers. Crystalized intelligence, it is called, and it gets better with experience. A caveat is that we often face physical changes that designers fail to account for into their work.
Al Cannistra's insight:

we are NOT as capable as our younger selves - on the physical side...   so what now?

88-Year-Old With Alzheimer's Recaptures Seventeen Magazine Moment

88-Year-Old With Alzheimer's Recaptures Seventeen Magazine Moment | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
A memory care staff in Texas helped resident Betty Mohr, who has Alzheimer's recreate the ad she modeled for in a 1945 issue of Seventeen magazine.
Al Cannistra's insight:

MOST unusual curation for "Intelligent World Today" - or is it? We are all used to seeing pretty people in pictures, movies, videos and commercials - yet the inhabitants of the planet come in many variations. Why not celebrate grandma or great grandma? Some of you are lucky to still have them in your life. And, if it is not your nana we are looking at, perhaps she is someone else's! Acceptance of reality is Intelligence - is it not?

Why marketing to seniors is so terrible

Why marketing to seniors is so terrible | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
And yet by 2020, the world will have more 55-year-olds than 5-year-olds, and older people are expected to generate half of all urban consumption growth between 2015 and 2030. The U.S. Census Bureau has pegged 2035 as the year older adults will outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history. By 2060 in China, one in three people–or 487 million–will be over 60. As far as brands are concerned, that’s a lot of potential sales.
Al Cannistra's insight:

Demographics changing?  Or, are yesterday’s youth that were the target of marketeers simply fast becoming the largest marketing opportunity in history? It will be interesting to step back and watch millions targeted for billions!

Why some Dutch university students are living in nursing homes

Why some Dutch university students are living in nursing homes | INTELLIGENT WORLD TODAY | Scoop.it
In today’s society both young and old increasingly find themselves living in a bubble of like-minded and similar-aged peers. This is especially true of university students who leave home at 18 to live with people of the same age – who have quite often had similar life experiences. Given this, the decision by a Dutch nursing home to run a programme providing free rent to university students in exchange for 30 hours a month of their time – “acting as neighbours” with elderly residents – is unusual.
Al Cannistra's insight:

MAYBE - we should study a design idea that would place nursing homes (or senior living facilities) nearby universities and start blending generations - something that has somehow been lost in today's world....  the young and the old could learn from each other  -  so many potential benefits from housing to companionship - I really really would like to see this explored - so please share...
